Three Words Day 1

For the start of the project, our tutors decided to take us up to London so that we could get a full experience with how to become inspired independently by carefully selecting 2 museums/exhibitions that related to our 3 chosen words. The 3 words I had chosen was Jack the Ripper, Bleed and Grotesque. I feel that these 3 words are relevant to Jack the Ripper because he is well known to be a mass murdering serial killer of particularly, female prostitutes in Whitechapel around the year 1888 and also, there are many other suspicious rumours which are unknown and intriguing till this present day. In addition to this, the museum/exhibitions which I went to was the Wellcome Museum holding the Sexology Exhibition and following that, I went to the Jack the Ripper tour, however I only followed the route but admittedly, it was much harder to find everything without the guide, so I may have to go again in my own time. Nonetheless, I feel as if I have gathered enough primary photography, research and sketches during the day. Below is some primary and researched imagery from the Wellcome Museum.

Critically, it was very important for me to gather as much research as I could at the beginning of this project and I really feel as if I already have a sense of what were doing. Tomorrow, I am aware that we will be doing a series of drawings using mixed mediums and then following that, we will work on the stands becoming inspired and relating our three words to the development work. I must admit that I am much fonder of this project than the last couple because I really do sense an impact of independence with this work, which is when I admire us as a class at most because we get to observe everyones strengths and capabilities. If I would have done anything differently this day, it would have been to have done more sketches, although it was pretty impossible during the time limit. Also, considering the Ripper tour was only at 7:30pm everyday, we could not attend, thus I will try to go in my own time.

Overall, I am very keen to start this project and I have a feeling that a lot of this project will involve knitwear, which I haven't really taken an opportunity to focus on yet for a garment piece. It may also look interesting if I perhaps decided to make a collection of pieces, rather than just 1 complete garment, but this will all unfold once I start developing my designs and processes. In particular for this project, I am really keen on focusing on the naked body, but perhaps seeing how it is observed in other cultures and tribes e.g Some African and Peruvian tribes expect the women to have no tops on, however this could be due to factors such as traditions, religions, sexism, decorative art and more. Thus, it will be interesting to gather even more research to elaborate and experiment with everything I have so far.
