Final Garment
Back Front
This is the final outcome for the 2 week project of 'Deconstruction and Reconstruction'. I am extremely pleased with the outcome considering that it is a full garment piece rather than just 1 e.g jacket or a skirt. Hence, I think that all my samples and fabrications really worked very well together. The most difficult and challenging thing about producing this garment was the actual hanging of the frayed pieces. Although it may be a simple task, there were many variations as to how I could hang them and I luckily the back had a sort of tube lining between the arms, thus I managed to slide some of the frayed pieces through to the other side to add more perspective and texture considering that it appears as if it has come from nowhere. If I could have done anything differently, it would have been nice to make a series or collection of these in different colours, however it would have to be kept in an oriental colour standard. Nonetheless, I wanted to keep this garment very minimal but really exhaust the theme of reconstruction and deconstruction, which I profoundly did using materials such as towels and bath robes.
On the day of presenting these garments, we had to go around both groups and write crit on other peoples pieces of paper if we thought they really stood out in a positive way or needed any feedback to improve. Surprisingly, my piece of paper had a vast amount of comments on them and I actually only got one improvement suggestion, thus I was obviously thrilled. The positive feedback included some saying, "Love the use of manipulation and materials!", "Illustrations and overlays are amazing!", "One of the best books i've seen!" and many more. The improvement feed back was, "Perhaps you should have a Textiles sample book instead of putting it all in one". Despite this, it suggests that I did have a lot of samples to work with but in a sense it is good that I have potentially enough to put into another book which suggests that I did quite a lot of experimentation with fabrics, which in my opinion I would say is true.
Overall, I am really chuffed with not only my outcome but also all the feedback I received from both groups. I also saw some amazing pieces as I walked around the room and it has really made me see how much we have all improved in such a short amount of time during this course and I can't wait to learn even more skills and techniques for future projects to really see where I can push myself and become as independent and as original with my style as I can be as a young, aspiring textile/designer.
